Maybe it was the timing, after a few hours of drinking in the warm hospitality of extended family. Maybe it was the fact that everybody was talking at once, enjoying multiple conversations in a language I do not know. Or maybe it was because somebody else had cooked it. To be honest, I do not know. But I do know it was perhaps the finest gulasz I had eaten. Just a couple of weeks now and maybe – just maybe – I can convince a reincarnation, albeit from an Italian kitchen…

• A perhaps more traditional German recipe with a good choice of beer.

Needless to say, if I ever get to know Aldona’s recipe, it shall be kept under wraps.
