Unlucky Thirteen

In 1925 and 1926, the Delage factory team lost two drivers, Paul Torchy and Giulio Masetti. Both were racing number thirteen cars, Torchy at the San Sebastián Grand Prix in Spain and Masetti in the Targa Florio in Sicily.

Since Masetti lost his life, the number has been largely ignored by top level motor sporting events and racing series organisers. On occasion the number has been allowed, the last time in Formula One being the 1976 British Grand Prix when Davina Galicia failed to qualify her Surtees for the race.
